We asked AI for the best plumbers in Miami. It named zero.

Not one plumbing company. This wasn't a trick question — this is what a real customer gets now, and it's the single biggest shift in local search since Google Maps.

What actually happened

We asked an AI assistant, plainly: "Who are the best plumbers in Miami? Name specific plumbing companies."

"I don't have access to real-time reviews, licensing databases, or current customer feedback, so I can't reliably name 'the best' plumbers in Miami — that would require up-to-date information I don't have."

Instead, it told the customer to check Google Maps, Yelp, Angi, BBB and Nextdoor themselves.

Read that again: the machine refused to recommend anyone. If you're a Miami plumber, being invisible there isn't a bug in your listing — this is the new default.

Why AI skips local businesses

AI doesn't rank businesses the way Google does. It looks for things it can verify and quote: clear pages that answer specific questions, consistent business details across the web, structured data it can parse, and sources it trusts.

Most plumbers' websites are brochures — services, photos, a phone number. There's nothing for an answer engine to quote. So it says nothing.

The uncomfortable part: the businesses that do get named aren't necessarily better plumbers. In our testing, some trades get concrete names back — pools, towing — and others get refused entirely, purely based on how much machine-readable, consistent information exists online. The winners are the ones who made themselves quotable.

The 3 fixes that change it

None of this requires a redesign for its own sake. It requires being findable by a machine.
